Facilitators: Solomon Zewolde and Shaheena Khan | Five 2 hour sessions | Spring: 13:00 - 15:00 Tuesday January 15, 29 + February 12, 26 + March 12 | Rooms Jan 15 = 826 / Jan 29 = B42 in the School of Pharmacy / Feb 12 = 777 / Feb 26 + Mar 12 = 790

This student-led CRT reading group was formed following expression of interest by Doctoral students who plan to use CRT in their research and/or those who would like to engage in a scholarly discussion on CRT, an extremely interesting and fast growing theoretical and methodological lens exciting interest from an increasing number of educational researchers.

At this initial stage, this reading group will focus on understanding what CRT is, its history and its basic tenets. Beginning this autumn term, the group will read chapters from the book Taylor, Gillborn & Ladson Billings (2016) ‘Foundations of Critical Race Theory in Education (2nd Edition). The topics for this term are listed in the table below along with dates and rooms.

Through the reading of and the focused discussion on the articles listed below, this reading group will offer the opportunity to deepen our understanding of the very essence of CRT and some of its key tenets such as the permanence of racism, critique of liberalism, its link to intersectionality and the focus on the experiential knowledge of blacks and other minorities.

Participants do not need to have previous knowledge of CRT. The only requirement is to read before each session and engage in the discussions. Everybody is welcome!

Five Topics from Taylor, E., Gillborn, D., & Ladson-Billings, G. (2nd edition.). (2016). Foundations of critical race theory in education. New York: Routledge.

NB: There are many copies of this volume in the IOE library, and there are also links to these articles electronically.
