Five Approaches to Qualitative Data Analysis - ROOM: 744 - CANCELLED In-Person
This course has unfortunately been cancelled. It is expected to run again in the Spring and Summer terms of 2017-2018.
It is common for research students after their data collection to feel lost and confused about how to proceed. This student-led workshop will address this issue by demonstrating some of the most popular methods of analysis. The purpose of this workshop is to help students embarking on their data analysis to explore some of the key questions such as - What does it mean to do qualitative analysis? What methods are out there? How do I choose appropriate methods?
This is an empirical workshop in which the facilitator will demonstrate five ways in which the same data transcript can be analysed and interpreted, and enable participants to reflect on and compare the various ways to analyse data. Each session will involve a) a presentation of an approach to data analysis (e.g. discourse analysis, dialogical analysis, network analysis, narrative analysis, grounded theory); b) an illustration of the analysis on the familiar data transcript, and c) a group discussion and reflection on the strengths and weaknesses of the different methods.
The facilitator will have had hands-on experience with the method they are presenting and they will draw on their own data analysis experience to share the challenges they encountered and the insights they gained.
As this is an empirical workshop, participants should have already collected data, are in the process of doing so, or already started thinking about data analysis.
