Information and Digital Literacies (ONLINE) In-Person

IMPORTANT: This course is a core course for MPhil / PhD students who start their study in academic year 2019-20 (and later academic years). Places are limited, so please only enrol if this includes you. This is an updated version of our previous Information and Literature Searching course.

The information and digital literacies course focuses on the centrality of the literature review for the doctoral thesis. The aim of the course is to develop your information and digital literacies.  More specifically, the aims ensure that you learn:

  • how to construct searches and develop search strategies in order to find and access relevant information resources in all formats;
  • how to critically evaluate information sources;
  • about the ethical implications of using research;
  • how to begin to formulate a data management plan;
  • about the importance of historical inquiry and where to find primary sources;
  • about emerging technologies which can help you to organise and manage your references and your data;
  • about technologies that can help you keep current with new literature;
  • about other libraries and how to access collections outside UCL; and
  • about digital identities and how you can use social media for networking, collaborating and disseminating your research
