IOE MPhil/PhD Core Course (IMPCorC) - ONLINE In-Person
Dr Mark Newman | Summer (ONLINE): Monday 15 June - Sunday 12 July (Induction session on 15 June)
Important note regarding the Summer online course: our registration system will detail this as an ‘all day course’. However, there is no specific time for this course. It will be continuous and run across the dates advertised (Monday 15 June - Sunday 12 July 2020). There are individual units for this course. The units do not take place on set dates or times, but there are windows of about one week within which you need to complete each unit. The student-facilitated groups will meet at agreed times.
Please note that this courses replaces the old 'What Is A Doctorate?' (WIAD) course, and the content is substantially the same. If you have completed WIAD, then you do not need to take IMPCorC as well.
This course aims to help students to reflect on the distinctive nature of doctoral study and academic research in the context of the university. To do this we will engage with a range of different kinds of doctoral and academic writing, for example: finished theses, post-doctoral-research proposals, and upgrade submissions. We will also engage in activities to help you to think through the process of formulating and focussing a piece of research. The course is designed to support your engagement in the early stages of your doctoral studies, and it is expected that you will complete it prior to your upgrade.
