Understanding Copyright for Doctoral Researchers (ONLINE) In-Person

Who owns the rights to your thesis, publications and other works you create as a student? Can you include other people's materials (e.g. text, photos, diagrams) in your thesis? Can you include your own published articles? Join this session to discuss these questions and more. We will give you an overview of copyright, discuss copyright in relation to your research, and offer you the opportunity to ask further questions.
This session will cover:
- An introduction to intellectual property and copyright; what is protected by copyright?
- Using copyright materials, with a focus on theses. Permissions, exceptions, and open materials
- Your own copyright: ownership, licensing, and sharing of theses and other work
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Use your copyright knowledge (permissions, exceptions, open materials) to include copyright works in your thesis
- Understand ownership and licensing of copyright works
- Use and create open (e.g. Creative Commons) materials
