Qualitative Data Analysis: an overview (introductory) (ONLINE) - Group 2 In-Person

Professor William Gibson (PGTA to be named) | Spring: Monday February 23 to Friday March 27

Important note: our registration system will detail this as an ‘all day course’.  However, there is no specific time for this course.  It will be continuous and run across the dates advertised.

NB: this is the same content as Group 1 earlier in the Spring term. You should only take one course.

NB: This course accrues 4 training points.

This course will provide an overview of four different approaches to analysis (Thematic Analysis, Narrative Analysis, Discourse Analysis and Grounded Theory). We will also talk about the concept of analysis in a general way, and the methodological issues that it presents (e,g. ethics, the representation of data, truth claims, generalisation). We will spend time thinking in detail about transcription and will look at how NVivo and other technologies can be used to support certain types of analysis.

The online module is organised through a set of online activities. Students will be provided with written lectures and assigned readings and use these to conduct practical tasks such as analysing samples of data, critiquing published work, or transcribing 'raw' data).  The course is highly interactive and students will need to have good internet access so that they can log on to the module at least every couple of days to contribute to forum discussions. There will also be bi-weekly real-timer seminars hosted online. All participation is undertaken at a distance and there is no requirement to attend the IOE.
