Interviews (face-to-face) In-Person
Professor Michael Reiss | Two one-and-a-half-hour sessions | Spring: 14:00 - 15:30 (UK time) Tuesdays 13 + 27 January (Room 418-Committee Room 2 in the IOE)
NB: This course accrues 1 training point.
These two sessions, each of 90 minutes, need to be taken together, so if you sign up for the course, please come to both sessions, unless you are unwell or there is an emergency.
In the first session we will (a) look at the different sorts of interviews (group interviews, individual interviews, structured interviews, semi-structured interviews, unstructured interviews, narrative interviews) and (b) practice different sorts of interviews.
In the second session, we will (a) look at how to put together an interview guide/schedule, and at the practicalities of interviewing (ethics, audio-/video-recording, interview technique, duration, transcription); (b) look at how interviews, once undertaken, can be analysed.
The course would probably be of most use to someone who has not yet used interviews to collect data for their doctorate but is intending to. Both sessions consist of input from the course leader with extensive class discussion. There is no session break.
You will need, on your own, to undertake a short exercise between the first and second session. This will probably take you about 30 minutes.
