The relationship between ethnicity and education is a very important, but also a very complex one. There are many studies that look at different aspects of this relationship, but many more are still needed to investigate it fully. This module aims to identify, investigate and debate a number of issues in studies focusing on education and ethnicity. We will discuss the complex ways in which linguistic and cultural factors interact in educational and social contexts in contemporary world. The module will also facilitate discussions and understanding of analytical concepts and methodological tools to carry out educational research in mult-iethnic and multilingual contexts, with an emphasis on issues of ethnicity and education.
The overall aim in this module is to provide students with information and guidance on doing research on education and ethnicity in an informed way. The module will explore related concepts, approaches and methods and give students the skills with which to start looking at existing research critically and analytically and the ability to plan their own research.
Every workshop will consist of a lecture and some practical exercises in groups or pairs.
