An Introduction to Ideal Type Analysis: Identifying Patterns Across Qualitative Data (ONLINE) In-Person

Dr Elizabeth Li | One two-hour session | Autumn: 12:00 - 14:00 (UK time) Tuesday 1 December

NB: this course is worth 1 training point.

This introductory workshop provides an overview of ideal-type analysis, a qualitative method for identifying meaningful patterns and groupings across qualitative data while retaining attention to individual cases. The session will cover what ideal-type analysis is and how it bridges cross-case and within-case approaches, when it is appropriate to use, and the seven key steps involved in conducting one — from familiarisation and case reconstructions through to constructing types, credibility checks, and making comparisons with additional data. Published examples from psychological and health research will be discussed, and practical interactive exercises will be included throughout.

No prior experience with ideal-type analysis is required. Open to all doctoral researchers. This workshop may be particularly useful for you if: you (prepare to) have a qualitative dataset and want to go beyond thematic analysis to identify meaningful groupings or patterns across participants; you want a rigorous and transparent method for comparing cases without losing individual stories; you are interested in linking qualitative typologies to quantitative outcome data; or you work with interview data, observational data, or other naturalistic data sources and want a structured framework for cross-case analysis.
