An Introduction to Meta-Synthesis: Systematic Reviews of Qualitative Research (ONLINE) In-Person

Dr Elizabeth Li | One two-hour session | Autumn: 12:00 - 14:00 (UK time) Wednesday 25 November

NB: This course accrues 1 training point.

This introductory workshop provides an overview of meta-synthesis, a qualitative method for synthesising findings across multiple qualitative studies to develop new interpretations and theoretical frameworks. The session will cover what meta-synthesis is and how it differs from meta-analysis and other forms of systematic review, when it is appropriate to use, and the main stages involved in conducting one, including formulating a research question using the SPIDER framework, searching and selecting literature, extracting and appraising data, and synthesising findings to generate new interpretations. An example study will be used to walk through each stage concretely, and practical interactive exercises will be included throughout.

No prior experience with meta-synthesis is required. Open to all doctoral researchers. This workshop may be particularly useful for you if you are focusing on qualitative approaches in your thesis, whether you are planning a literature-based chapter or paper, or want to understand how findings across qualitative studies can be meaningfully synthesised.
