The Augmented Academic - Prompts, pitfalls and principles (ONLINE) (AUT 26-27) In-Person
Professor Sandra Leaton Gray | One one-and-a-half-hour session | Autumn: 18:00 - 19:30 (UK time) Tuesday November 3
NB: This course accrues 1 training point.
This 90-minute session will considers what it means to use generative AI dialogically in research. Rather than approaching AI as a means of automating discrete tasks, it focuses on the conversational work through which researchers can bring emerging ideas into clearer form. The session approaches this development cautiously. The value of AI lies in how researchers respond to its outputs, especially when they question them and return them to the demands of evidence, a focus on explicit method, and alignment with human disciplinary judgement. The session offers practical ways of using AI to support research development and writing, while insisting that dialogical AI use should prepare researchers for richer human conversation rather than replace it. It also includes reference to the CDE guidance “Practical Red Lines for the Use of AI by Doctoral Students”.
