SUMMARY:Doing Systematic Observation (face-to-face)
DESCRIPTION:Professor Sinead Harmey | Two two-hour sessions | Summer: 14:00
 - 16:00 (UK time) Thursday 7\, 14 May (Room 736 in the IOE)\n\nNB: This
course accrues 2 training points.\n\nThis course is run by Professor Sinead
 Harmey\, PhD\, Associate Professor in Literacy Education.\n\nDirect
observation of human behaviours in different contexts is fundamental to
education research\, teaching\, and learning. Conducted effectively\, it
can provide rich information about phenomena in context. Doing systematic
observation well\, however\, requires clear thought about research design
and questions\, data collection and analysis\, the role of the observer\,
ethical issues\, reliability and validity. In this course\, we will
consider the use of systematic observations using examples from literacy
and developmental research. Participants will have the opportunity to
think and engage in activities and discussions related to their own
research.\n\nThis course will provide a comprehensive introduction to
systematic observation and would be particularly suited to students who are
pre-upgrade and are considering their research design.
